There were smiles, laughter, the odd tear and some wonderful bears as Goresbrook School’s founding Reception pupils arrived for their very first day of school.
Families were encouraged to stay and chat to teachers and watch their children settle into their new classrooms. The pupils, however, seemed to feel at home already having met their class teachers and many of their classmates over the summer through welcome events and home visits.
The other special guests enjoying their first day of school were the Goresbrook Bears who joined the children for a Welcome Assembly and who will be the mascots and learning partners for the Reception pupils.
As an all-through school Goresbrook will grow by a new Reception cohort each year, and primary pupils will also be joined by Year 7 groups from September 2016. The whole school will be housed in one state-of-the-art building from next year and Goresbrook’s founding pupils will therefore have the opportunity to receive the same excellent education right through to Sixth Form.
Principal Clare Darley said:
‘What a way to start both Goresbrook School’s history and our pupils’ school careers! There has been lots of play, learning and friendship-making already and I am excited to see our pupils develop throughout the year. It is unusual for a new school to have such a close-knit community but pupils, families and staff alike have all shared in this achievement.’
‘Given that it is everybody’s first day at school, I think it’s safe to say we’re all “bearing” up really well!’
Goresbrook is part of United Learning, a national group of academies and independent schools with the shared aim to bring out the best in everyone.
Its Chief Executive, Jon Coles, said:
‘Opening Goresbrook School is a huge accomplishment. I am proud that, as a brand new school, we have been able to shape it around the needs of the local community and start work on a purpose-built school building. I know that Goresbrook will be offering a remarkable education to Barking and Dagenham children for generations to come.’
A limited number of Reception places are being held for pupils starting school this September – interested families can contact the school on 020 3597 6666. Nursery and Reception applications are also now open for September 2015.
