Shoreham Academy Celebrates Official Opening

Shoreham Academy reached another milestone today as it was officially opened by Olympic Hockey Bronze Medallist Alex Danson.

The academy, which was judged ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted last year welcomed guests from the local community including representatives from West Sussex County Council and local schools and universities which work in partnership with the academy. The school was also delighted to welcome parents of all the students performing in the opening ceremony.

The opening ceremony began with two Year 7 students Lauren Cook and Amir Alamri welcoming guests. This was followed by impressive student performances including:

  • A spectacular dance display given by Year 11 and 12 students;
  • A moving performance of ‘Read All About It’ which was sung by Year 8 student Leah Rhodie;
  • A piano recital given by Year 12 student Hannah Cogger.

During the ceremony, Principal Heidi Brown explained what the official opening meant for the academy. She said:

‘Today is about celebrating and giving thanks for the hard work, dedication and commitment that went into creating this academy and the wonderful opportunities it offers students.

‘Shoreham Academy is a vibrant and thriving school at the heart of the communities of Shoreham-by-Sea and Southwick. The school has undergone a tremendous journey over the past decade as demonstrated by the fact we are now recognised as an “Outstanding” school.

‘This beautiful building with all of its excellent facilities provides the perfect environment for us to bring out the “best in everyone” and instil in our students the confidence, skills and knowledge they need to make a real success of their lives.’

Representatives from the academy’s sponsor, United Learning, also joined students at the special ceremony. During the ceremony, Group Chief Executive Jon Coles said:

‘The journey Shoreham Academy has been on since it opened is remarkable. Not only has it been judged “Outstanding” by Ofsted but its exam results have improved year-on-year and, as today’s ceremony has shown, students are excelling outside the classroom in drama, music and sport. The academy’s success is testament to the hard work and dedication of the staff led by Principal Heidi Brown. Over the past decade, under her leadership, the academy has made significant progress and now that it is housed in this magnificent new building, the opportunities for further success are exceptional.’

During the ceremony, Alex Danson, who won a Bronze Medal at the London 2012 Olympics, addressed students. Welcoming the Olympic Medallist, Ms Brown said:

‘We are thrilled that Alex Danson has joined us today. Her own story of hard work, determination and success is an inspiration to our students. They have all been looking forward to meeting her and catching a sight of her Bronze Medal!’

Before Alex spoke, Year 7 student Karl Hibberd gave an exciting gymnastics display. Alex was then introduced to the guests and students by three Year 13 students who had been involved in last summer’s Paralympics as Games Makers. The three Sixth Formers were part of the team of six Shoreham Academy students who worked on the Field of Play at the Paralympics Table Tennis tournament.

Alex Danson gave an account of her experience of competing in last summer’s Olympic Games and encouraged students to aim high. She said:

‘I feel honoured to be opening the wonderful new building at Shoreham Academy. Not only does this provide a modern and fantastic facility for the students to enjoy, develop and learn in but it is a representation of the academy’s pursuit of excellence and commitment to the future.’
