Encouraging Ofsted Report for Stockport Academy

Stockport Academy has been given a vote of confidence after Ofsted gave the academy a highly encouraging report following a one day visit at the beginning of June

The academy received a routine Monitoring Visit to assess the progress which has been made since its last full Ofsted inspection in March.

The inspector was highly impressed by the progress which has been made since the last inspection and, in a letter to Principal Frank McCarron, wrote:

You have created a culture of aspiration and self-belief that inspires the work of the academy.

The inspector went on to identify the specific areas which have improved significantly since the last report.  These included:

  • The achievement of Sixth Form students;
  • Attendance which is said to have risen ‘due to more rigorous monitoring and earlier intervention to support students’ as well as the ‘work of pastoral managers’ who make ‘a major contribution to removing barriers’ and ‘spurring on [student’s] achievement’;
  • Student behaviour which has improved ‘due to the consistent implementation of agreed standards of conduct’.

Commenting on the report, Principal Frank McCarron said:

‘I am very pleased that the inspector saw how much progress is underway at the academy.  It is heartening that the inspector found strong evidence that we are on the right track and that the initiatives we have put in place are the right ones.  We know that there is still a long way to go but this report will spur us on to aim high and continue to drive improvement throughout the academy.’

The academy’s sponsor, United Learning, was also praised and was said to provide ‘well-judged support to the academy’.  Andy Buck, Managing Director – Academies of United Learning, said:

‘This is a very strong report for Stockport Academy which shows just how much Frank McCarron and the rest of the staff have achieved this year.  This report signals the huge capacity the academy has to improve further and we look forward to supporting the leadership team as the academy continues to go from strength to strength.’
