Later this week, thousands of schoolchildren across Greater Manchester will be supporting two cyclists as they attempt to complete a mammoth bike ride in aid of Sport Relief.
On Friday (9th March), Stockport Academy, Manchester Academy, William Hulme’s Grammar School and Salford City Academy are teaming up to support United Learning’s RideABC challenge.
The day links directly to the gruelling week-long task set by the group’s Head of Sport Shaun Dowling and Educational Technologist Bruce Wilson, who are planning on cycling 600 miles to raise a target of £40,000 for Sport Relief and United Learning’s SITUPS project. The pair are visiting 25 United Learning schools on the way, travelling from Ashford to Bournemouth to Carlisle.
Lending their encouragement, the four Greater Manchester schools have organised a wide range of related fundraising activities. At Stockport Academy, every student will be taking part in the ‘Sport Relief Mile’ run, whilst at Manchester Academy and William Hulme’s Grammar School, on 8th March, 600 students will each be running a mile during lessons. This is followed on 9th March with students and staff participating in an Iron Man Triathlon.
Finally, also on 9th March, students at Salford City Academy will cycle out to meet Shaun and Bruce, forming a ceremonial peloton (pack of riders) as they complete the Manchester leg of their journey.
“We are delighted to be teaming up with Sport Relief this year for RideABC, as well as raising money for United Learning’s own SITUPS charity. We have already been overwhelmed by the support United Learning schools have given this project and are thrilled that so many of our students will have the opportunity to be involved in some exciting physical challenges, all whilst raising money for two brilliant charities.”
Frank McCarron, Executive Principal for Stockport Academy, Manchester Academy and William Hulme’s Grammar School, said:
“We are really looking forward to being part of Shaun and Bruce’s amazing journey and can’t wait for our students to get involved in the fundraising and physical activities that contribute towards what will no doubt be another memorable Sport Relief.”
