Academy achieves best ever A Level results
Muyuma Rai is leading the way at Barnsley Academy which has recorded its best ever A Level results.
Of those students in the academy’s Sixth Form sitting their A levels this year, 27% achieved A grades – the first ones to do so, with 53% receiving grades A*-B compared to 8% last year. The overall pass rate was also 100% - up from 92% in 2012.
Originally from Kathmandu in Nepal, 18 year old Muyuma Rai is the first student at the academy to take four A levels, receiving A grades in biology, chemistry, maths and psychology.
Muyuma left Kathmandu with her family aged ten and now lives in Kendray. She has been at the academy since 2006 and in 2011 achieved the school’s best ever GCSE results with six A*s and four A grades. She now hopes her latest academic success will help her fulfill her ambition of returning to Nepal to support the healthcare system and will be heading to the University of Bradford to study Clinical Science before transferring to the University of Leeds to read Medicine in 2014.
Other success stories include:
- Jessica Sykes who joined Barnsley Academy in 2011 and achieved an A and two Bs to secure one of only 30 places at London Veterinary College to study Veterinary Science.
- Abbey Baldwin who is from the Bank End area of Barnsley and achieved an A in her Applied Business A Level, a distinction star in BTEC ICT and a distinction star in BTEC Travel and Tourism (the equivalent of two A grades at A Level). She is now going to Huddersfield University to study Business Management.
- Year 12 student Alex Littlewood who has become the first student at the academy to achieve an A grade at A Level a year early, achieving the result in maths. He is also one of only two students at the academy studying Further Maths.
Barnsley Academy Principal Dave Berry commented:
"We are immensely proud of Muyuma, Abbey, Jessica, Alex and all of our Sixth Form students who have worked extremely hard to achieve these excellent results. We had nearly double the number of students taking A Levels this year. We wish all of our departing Sixth Form students all the very best as they head off to university in their ongoing pursuit of educational excellence and career success."
Barnsley Academy is part of United Learning – a group of over 30 academies and independent schools located across the country. Andy Buck, Managing Director – Academies of United Learning, said:
"These are a strong set of results and demonstrate the very high standards the academy is setting for itself. They are testament to Principal Dave Berry and the rest of the academy’s staff who work tirelessly to provide students with the very best educational opportunities. These results mark a step change for the academy’s Sixth Form and demonstrate how it is increasingly becoming the first choice for post-16 education in Barnsley."
