GCSE celebrations get underway at Irlam and Cadishead Academy

Students and staff at Irlam and Cadishead Academy (ICA) are celebrating the awarding of GCSE qualifications today, after another challenging year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

This year, GCSEs were awarded following Teacher Assessed Grades (TAGs) due to the cancellation of external examinations. As part of this assessment process, students at ICA sat moderated examinations and completed a variety of coursework to demonstrate the progress they had made.

Today was a chance to congratulate students on all they have achieved throughout their time at the school – from Year 7 all the way through their GCSE courses. With the awarding of their GCSE qualifications, the Year 11s will now be looking ahead to continuing their studies at Sixth Form and colleges, or taking up further training or jobs placements.

Those celebrating particular individual successes this morning included:

  • Zak Matthews-Wynne, who was awarded one top Grade 9, two Grade 8s, five Grade 7s and a Distinction* – the highest possible mark in a BTEC;
  • Rula Shukarova, who was awarded one Grade 9, two Grade 8s, one Grade 7 and four Grade 6s;
  • Joshua Knox, who was awarded two Grade 8s, four Grade 7s, two Grade 6s and a Distinction*;
  • Ingilia Lacej, who was awarded three Grade 7s, four Grade 6s and two Grade 5s;
  • Macie Shuttleton, who was awarded three Grade 7s, one Grade 6, two Grade 5s, a Grade 4 and a Distinction*;
  • Robert Hembrough, who was awarded two Grade 7s, five Grade 6s, one Grade 5 and a Distinction*;
  • Charlotte Richardson, who was awarded four Grade 6s, three Grade 5s and two Grade 4s.

Commenting on the day, Mrs T Holdsworth, Principal at Irlam and Cadishead Academy, said:

“I want to congratulate all our Year 11s receiving their GCSE qualifications today. It is always a proud moment as a Head to see students coming to the end of their time at school and receiving the grades they need to move on successfully, but it is even more so after the challenges of the past 18 months. This group of young people has shown huge determination and resilience and have impressed us all with their continued ambition for their futures. We look forward to seeing what they achieve next and wish them all the very best.”
