Over 1,000 Teams Have Now Taken Part in #UnitedApp

First launched in 2014, #UnitedApp is an increasingly popular national enterprise competition. In partnership with 7billionideas, it challenges Year 9 students in United Learning schools across the country to generate educational app ideas that could have a global impact. And arguably the most exciting thing about the competition is that the winning team gets to make their app idea a reality.

The competition is now into its third year and has garnered entries from a record 496 teams nationally. Its popularity has built year on year with 444 teams competing in 2016 and 181 in 2015. As a result, over 1,000 student teams from across the Group have now had the opportunity to work creatively and develop their business acumen – this equates to roughly 4,000 students.

For #UnitedApp17, representatives from 7billionideas have already visited schools across United Learning to launch the competition in style. Teams then had roughly six weeks to form, generate an idea and work on their entry. Last week, judges had the extremely difficult job of going through all the ideas and picking 50 to go through to Round Two.

In their individual schools, those teams will now create a video to demonstrate their vision for their app idea and develop their plans to promote it should they go onto win. Eventually, ten teams will be invited to take part in the final and pitch to win the competition.

The competition has already seen two worthy past winners. In 2015, Nova Hreod Academy students won with their concept for an app to help primary parents support their children with their homework. Last year, Greenacre School’s ‘Financial Helper’ team won for their app aimed at improving teenagers’ financial literacy. Both apps are now available on the App Store.

Following the success of #UnitedApp, 7billionideas and United Learning have now launched a similar competition aimed at primary-age children – #UnitedIDEAS.

Victoria Russell-Robbins, Enrichment Lead at United Learning, said:

“#UnitedApp has grown ever more popular since we first launched it in 2014 and it is something that I know students in our schools across the country look forward to.

“The competition is an exciting way for our students to develop their creativity, communications skills and entrepreneurship while learning about things like coding and market research.

“Each year, the calibre of entries we receive has been impressive and the competition continues to demonstrate how talented our students are. This year in particular, we are keen to see what our primary pupils come up with for #UnitedIDEAS.”

David Harkin, 7billionideas CEO, said:

“To be part of this competition from the very start is something we’re incredibly proud of at 7billionideas. Every year we have the privileged opportunity to visit so many schools in a short space of time and each year the standard of entries is improving.

“It’s been a wonderful relationship with United Learning which has extended further this year to working with all their primary schools launching a second competition called #UnitedIDEAS. We hope that with the support of the sponsors (IBM, Casio Projectors, IDNS and Clevertouch) these competitions can continue in the future as we do our bit to encourage and support the next generation of entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs.”
