We are very proud to announce that Shoreham Academy pupil, Josh, has won the NCEM Young Composers Award 2015. This Award is presented in partnership with BBC Radio 3 and the internationally-acclaimed Dunedin Consort directed by John Butt.
Young Composers were invited to create new settings for a short dramatic scene from one of two Monteverdi masterpieces: Orfeo or II combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda. Students were provided with an English translation of the texts, which could be cut or adapted as appropriate. The new works had to be written for two or three singers accompanied by a small ensemble of baroque instruments, similar to those of Monteverdi.
Josh was one of seven finalists selected and invited to the national Centre for Early Music in York, on 14th May. The young composers had the opportunity during the day to receive feedback on their shortlisted entries in a workshop led by the composer Christopher Fox, composer and professor in Music at Brunel University, and presented by the Dunedin Consort, directed by John Butt.
Josh’s winning Composition, Fractos Corde, will be premiered by the Dunedin Consort in Glasgow on Friday 2 October. This concert will be recorded for broadcast on BBC Radio 3’s Early Music Show at 2.00 pm on Sunday 1 November.
Josh is clearly a very talented musician. He is also working towards his grade 8 piano exam, which he will sit in July. He is a passionate composer, and has just received a commission from the Shoreham Oratorio Choir to compose a piece for Christmas. He will also be writing a new work for the Shoreham Academy Choir, to be performed at their Carol Service in December.
Josh will be presenting his Composition Portfolio to David Wordsworth at the end of June – David is an agent/promotor for a number of major composers, and our aim is for Josh to study composition with one of them, during his A2 Studies. Josh’s ambition is to study Composition and Piano at one of the leading Conservatoires in Music.
