Students open GCSEs at Sheffield Springs Academy

There was happiness at Sheffield Springs Academy as students opened their GCSE envelopes today and found out what they had been awarded.

This year, GCSEs were awarded following Teacher Assessed Grades (TAGs) due to the cancellation of external examinations. As part of this assessment process, students at Sheffield Springs sat moderated examinations and completed a variety of coursework to demonstrate the progress they had made.

Across the morning, students and staff celebrated the awarding of GCSE qualifications, after what has been a challenging 18 months across the country due to Covid-19. It was an opportunity to recognise students’ hard work and determination over their five years at the academy and look ahead to their next steps.

Among those celebrating their GCSEs today were:

  • Samantha Foo, who was awarded five of the top Grade 9s, two Grade 8s, one Grade 7 and a Distinction* –  the highest possible for BTEC;
  • Charlotte Rooney, who was awarded one Grade 9, seven Grade 8s and one Distinction*;
  • Abdelbasit Lemamsha, who was awarded four Grade 9s, two Grade 8s, three Grade 7s and a Disinction*.

Commenting on today’s achievements, Mark Shipman, Principal at Sheffield Springs Academy, said:

“The past 18 months have been very challenging for our students and staff due to Covid-19, so I am particularly pleased to be congratulating our students and thanking our staff for their hard work towards the qualifications being awarded today. With these, our students our students will either go straight into the world of work or continue with their education. Each student celebrating today can be proud of their achievements and their resilience during what has been an unprecedented period.”
