Fundraising for Sport Relief

After much success fundraising for Sport Relief in previous years, United Learning have decided to coordinate and combine our efforts to raise more money than ever before!

#RideABC will be the catalyst for a host of creative sporting events and physical challenges/activities that will take place across the group of United Learning schools.

To spark our fundraising efforts two central office members of staff, Shaun Dowling (Head of Sport) and Bruce Wilson (Educational technologist) are attempting a gruelling 600 mile bike ride from Ashford to Bournemouth to Carlisle over 8 days, visiting 25 United Learning schools en route.

Funds raised will be split 75/25 with 75% to go to Sport Relief and 25% to United Learning. United Learning will use this money to fund our SITUPS work, using the power of sport to drive improvement across our group of schools. Through SITUPS United Learning will fund a range of charities, some already supported by Sport Relief, so that vulnerable young people in United Learning schools benefit directly from this fundraising project

The Riders...

Shaun Dowling

Shaun is a former Head of PE and Director of Specialism who progressed to Deputy Headship in two sports colleges. Shaun is now Head of Sport at United Learning. In this role he supports United Learning schools in improving the quality of their PE and school sport and how they use the power of sport to raise standards across the group.

Since retiring from football in his mid-thirties, Shaun has turned his attention to endurance sport and multi-sport including competing twice in the London marathon and in numerous triathlons including a half Ironman in 2015 and a full Ironman in 2017. Shaun is passionate about cycling and has also participated in numerous cycling events, including cycling up Alpe D’Huez and the Col de Galibier.

However Ride ABC, as a multi-stage event, will be a new and daunting challenge for Shaun! In the build up to the ride Shaun has faced the challenge of fitting his training around his busy schedule, waking up in the early hours to complete his demanding training regime.

Bruce Wilson

Former Science teacher Bruce has worked with schools, in both the UK and New Zealand, for many years.

As an educational technologist at United Learning Bruce has a passion for improving the quality of teaching and learning through the effective use of ICT. He is a passionate family man and father and is co-opted Governor at his sons’ school in Hertfordshire.

In his leisure time Bruce enjoys doing being active in the outdoors. Prior to Ride ABC Bruce has competed in three marathons, three half Ironmans, a Coast-to-Coast Scotland multi-sport one-day challenge and numerous triathlons. He has also taken part in the famous Marmotte cycle sportive in the French Alps.

Fitting his exhausting training regime around his job, family life and other commitments has been challenging for Bruce, who has even put up a training bike in his living room, much to the disdain of his family!
