GCSE celebrations underway at Walthamstow Academy

Students and staff at Walthamstow Academy are celebrating today following the awarding of GCSE grades.

This year, as with A Levels, GCSEs were awarded following Teacher Assessed Grades (TAGs) due to the cancellation of external examinations. This morning was an excellent opportunity to congratulate students for their hard work and perseverance, particularly in the face of disruption caused by the pandemic.

Standout individual successes at the school include:

  • Zak Peerbacos, who was awarded eight Grade 9s and one Grade 8;
  • Ellie-Beth Barnes, who was awarded eight Grade 9s and one Grade 8;
  • Jenai Allen, who was awarded six Grade 9s, two Grade 8s and one Grade 7.

All three students are set to return to the academy in September where they will be taking up their place in the Sixth Form to begin their A Level studies.

Speaking of his achievement today, Zak said:

“I am delighted with my grades and I’m extremely grateful for all the support, encouragement and outstanding teaching that has helped me achieve my aspirations at GCSE. My time at Walthamstow Academy has enabled me to flourish academically and socially and I am indebted to the teaching staff for all their advice and guidance. This school truly does bring out the best in everyone.”

Ellie-Beth commented:

“I’ve really enjoyed my time at the academy – it’s been a well spent five years. From the great teachers to the spectacular lessons, I couldn’t ask for a better experience. Hard work and strong determination will enable you to succeed no matter what!”

Jenai added:

“My time at Walthamstow Academy has been a blast! The school was able to provide all of us with quality, focused teaching and teachers that made school really enjoyable. They have demonstrated again and again that they support us all in achieving our very best.”

Today’s news comes after Sixth Formers at the academy celebrated their A Level results earlier this week, with many students securing places at some of the UK’s top universities, including the University of Cambridge, University of St Andrews and University College London.

Emma Skae, Principal at Walthamstow Academy said:

“Congratulations to all our students across Year 11 for their GCSE awards – I am so proud of every single one of them! It has been fantastic to see the progress they have made throughout their five years here and the qualifications they have received today showcase their ongoing hard work and determination.

“In what has been an incredibly challenging year, our students and staff have worked together superbly to secure these outcomes and ensure our young people have everything they need to reach their goals. We are very much looking forward to welcoming many of our Year 11s back into our Sixth Form in September where they will be able to continue benefiting from all the academy has to offer.”
