Southway Primary School Receives 'Good' OFSTED Rating.

Inspectors praised the “friendly and vibrant” school for high standards and “ambitious curriculum

Staff and pupils at Southway Primary School are celebrating this week after receiving a ‘Good’ Ofsted report which praised its “friendly and vibrant” atmosphere and high standards of teaching and learning.

Following a visit last term, Inspectors commended school leaders for putting in place an “ambitious curriculum” to ensure pupils develop the knowledge they need at each stage of their schooling. This includes catching up on any lost learning over the past two years as a result of the pandemic.

As Ofsted’s report highlights, Southway pupils “enjoy their learning” and “teachers make lessons interesting”. Inspectors were clear that the relationships between children and staff at the school are strong, with pupils said to “appreciate that their individual talents are recognised and developed” and feel encouraged to “work hard and aim high”.

Alongside their academic learning, the report praised the breadth of additional opportunities on offer as part of an ‘Education with Character’ at the school. This sees pupils benefit from the chance to “explore their individual interests” through clubs including musical, academic, sporting and well-being related activities.

The report also recognised the school’s strong value system, which is known as the ‘Southway Seven’ and is helping to prepare children well for the future. Pupils talked about the importance of being honest, kind and respectful and understand how this creates a better environment for everybody.

Importantly, Inspectors highlighted how highly pupils and parents talk of the school – with one parent said to sum up the views of many by saying:

“There have been many improvements at school. The children want to be there, want to learn and want to do well. My child is very happy at this school and I actively recommend Southway to other parents.”

Mike Wood, Principal at Southway Primary School, said:

“This ‘Good’ judgement from Ofsted is something that everyone associated with our school can take pride in, recognising the collective efforts of staff, pupils, families and governors over the past few years. I am particularly pleased that the Inspectors saw what a happy school community we are and how much pupils are enjoying being back in their classrooms and making the most of their learning.

“As ever, we remain committed to providing the very best start to our pupils’ education and giving them all the tools they will need to grow into successful young people. This report provides very positive foundations for Southway on which we will continue to build for the future.”

Darran Ellison-Lee, Director of Primary Education at United Learning, said:

“This recent Ofsted report is testament to the hard work of the whole school community, reflecting the significant improvements over recent years under the leadership of Mr Wood and his team. The Inspectors clearly saw that Southway is a friendly, vibrant school in which children are enjoying and thriving in their learning. Following the challenges of the past two years due to the pandemic, it is particularly positive that pupils are now catching up on any lost learning and opportunities and taking full advantage of being in school.”
