Following their visit in May, Ofsted inspectors have confirmed that Cambridge Academy for Science and Technology (CAST), continues to be a ‘Good’ school.
In their report, the inspectors note that students at the school are “ambitious to succeed” and “well prepared for careers in science, technology and computing.” The school, as a University Technical College (UTC), has a strong focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) with students benefiting from a unique blend of academic and technical learning.
Alongside their academic education, students take part in a wide range of events, visits and extra-curricular clubs, including the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme. Significantly, the report commends the school’s careers programme which provides students with “many opportunities to gain experience of work”. This means that they are able to successfully take their next steps into higher education or the world of work.
Staff at the school are said to have “strong subject knowledge” and “high expectations of all pupils”, adapting their teaching to ensure each and every student can access the curriculum. Leaders are likewise praised for designing an “ambitious and effective curriculum” and providing staff with ongoing training and opportunities.
In particular, the inspectors praised the school’s way of developing students’ character and respect for the people and places around them. The inspectors note that students “see the diversity of the school as a real strength” and that they “treat each other, and adults, with honesty, tolerance and respect.”
