Secondary Subject Advisor

It is always hard to provide a simple answer when I am asked what I do: essentially it is working with schools to continuously raise standards in English. This involves a variety of activities including curriculum development, writing assessments, and delivering training.

However, the best part of my job is the significant time I spend in schools across the country. It's an absolute privilege to work closely with colleagues, engage with students, and to be focused every day on the subject I love. Building strong relationships with people is at the core of my work, collaborating to provide the best possible educational experience for our students.

Regional Director

As a Regional Director in the secondary team, I work with a group of our schools in a support and accountability role. I’ve been with United Learning for six years now, and that time has flown. Heads run schools, of course, so my job is not to "micromanage", but to work alongside heads to ensure their schools are becoming the best they can be for the young people they serve.

The role of RD is incredibly rich and varied. I might take a call about a boiler one minute - and be answering a curriculum question the next. It’s a demanding job, but thoroughly rewarding, and never dull!

Having developed my skills as a Primary RE subject specialist in school for over a decade, it has been a professional joy to have the opportunity to apply that experience in my current role, developing a coherent Religion & Worldviews curriculum.

Having developed my skills as a Primary RE subject specialist in school for over a decade, it has been a professional joy to have the opportunity to apply that experience in my current role, developing a coherent Religion & Worldviews curriculum that maps and interlinks substantive and disciplinary knowledge through the whole curriculum journey.

It is great to get feedback and support teachers in our schools across the country. The role has also given me time to apply and engage in research, and we are delighted to be involved in the RE Council's Worldviews Project, which will support teachers and curriculum designers across the country. - Katie Gooch, Primary Religion & Worldviews Curriculum Lead

Estates Manager

I joined United Learning over two years ago as a fully qualified architect with more than twenty years of professional experience, and I am now a Central Office Estates Manager at United Learning.

My work originally began with looking after our Northern academies, but it has now grown to working and helping on strategic projects across the group. I support the schools on a day-to-day basis, and ensure we deliver projects that meet the needs of the schools and align with United Learning’s strategy for decarbonisation, look, feel, and condition. The projects we work on range in value and complexity, but always involve working collaboratively with the school and external consultants to ensure we deliver to the school’s brief and budget, whilst meeting statutory and legal requirements.

Our work can range from securing external funding for school projects to carrying out due diligence on the estate of any school considering joining United Learning. I enjoy what I do, with no two days the same. Some days are challenging, as in any role, but the most rewarding part for me personally is the positive impact the projects have for the pupils and staff at United Learning.

As an Estates team we pride ourselves in supporting our schools, keeping them safe, and delivering sustainable projects which future proof our estates.
