At the event, students were able to reflect on their achievements from the past academic year alongside their peers, teachers and families as they were presented with their awards. They also enjoyed student performances from ‘Charlie and The Chocolate Factory’ as well as a fantastic rendition of ‘When It’s Time’ by Year 10 student Riley Morris and ‘Long Live’ by the Sixth Form Band.
From awards in sport to science and art, students from Years 7 to 13 were commended for their excellent efforts throughout the year. Notable awards included the ‘Hilary Kingston Trophy for Excellence’ which was awarded to Sixth Form student Mia Carter in recognition of her determination and passion during her A Level studies. She hopes to begin her studies at the University of Oxford next year, reading Psychology and Philosophy.
Another Year 13 student, Kate Lindsey, was awarded the ‘Richard Chandaman Memorial Prize for Excellence in Chemistry’. She too is hoping to take up her place at Oxford in the autumn, studying Medicine.
Alongside the student awards, the achievements of staff were celebrated. After 22 years of committed service to the school, school counsellor Kev Robbins was presented with the ‘David Jones Legacy Cup’ in recognition of his dedication to supporting students and staff at the academy. The award came as a surprise to the longstanding member of staff who is set to retire this summer.
This year’s ceremony also featured a special celebrity guest. Picking up the ‘Charles Besly Memorial Cup’ for his BAFTA winning achievements as both writer and actor, alumnus of the school and star of Horrible Histories, Jim Howick, made an appearance as guest of honour. He spoke in his acceptance speech about how proud he was to receive the award and how surreal it felt to be back on the school stage 30 years after having won the Drama Award whilst a student at the academy.
Dave Oakes, Principal at The Regis School, said:
“We are immensely proud of the achievements of both students and staff at The Regis School. High standards and expectations are the bedrock of a successful learning community and whether in the classroom, on the stage, in the workshop, in sport, in the laboratory, at school or in the community, our students continue to achieve and deliver.
“My congratulations to all those whose talents and skills were recognised at our Awards Evening. I am sure that future success will be built upon the enthusiasm, fortitude and confidence you have demonstrated this year – well done everyone.”
