Mr Antell has worked at the academies for over ten years, initially as an Assistant Headteacher at Winton School for Boys before it merged with Glenmoor School and both joined United Learning. He has led the two schools for the last four years and is amongst the final four headteachers shortlisted for the award for ‘National Secondary Headteacher of the Year’.
During Mr Antell’s tenure, the academies have become amongst the highest performing and most heavily oversubscribed secondary schools in Dorset, with the government’s new Progress 8 measure placing them in the top 1% of schools in the country for GCSE results.
Mr Antell was nominated by one of his colleagues, Deborah Hawkins, who said:
“Ben set out ten years ago to create a school that local children and their parents could rely on to deliver a top-class education that they didn’t have to pay for or pass a test to access, and his dedication to realising that dream for the families of Bournemouth has been remarkable to witness. Ben is a really special leader and I am delighted that his work has been recognised.”
Judges from Pearson visited Glenmoor and Winton last week and interviewed staff, students and parents as well as meeting with Mr Antell himself as part of the process for deciding on the ultimate winner.
Mr Antell said of his nomination:
“I am hugely flattered to be nominated for this prestigious national award and believe the nomination is largely based on the outstanding work collectively of the Academies over the past 4 years. I am a small part of that improvement journey and feel humbled to be recognised in such a manner.”
Stuart Ingram, Principal of the Glenmoor and Winton Academies, said:
“I have never worked for anybody with such drive and determination for the young people in his care. I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this award.”
Pearson awards prizes in several categories including Teacher of the Year, School of the Year and Teaching Assistant of the Year, and announce the winners in June. The Awards Ceremony is televised on BBC2 in October.
