Forty-one pupils from Coleridge Community College took part in a special event to celebrate the Cambridge Corn Exchange's 150th anniversary, performing music they helped compose alongside professional musicians.

As part of the project Honouring our Past, Embracing our Future, pupils worked with composer and performer, Raph Clarkson as well as Britten Sinfonia musicians, to create original pieces reflecting what the Corn Exchange means to them today. Their music celebrated the venue’s role in Cambridge’s community and the idea that every voice deserves to be heard.

The project highlighted the power of music to build community and gave pupils an opportunity to collaborate with professionals.

Jamual, a Year 10 student who took part in the project, said: “Honestly, the Corn Exchange was the most amazing experience. I loved the last four weeks of working with the Britten Sinfonia, Raph, Faye and the team. Thank you all.”

Another student, Tommy, added: “That was one of the most beautiful experiences of my life. On stage everyone was really going for it, and it sounded amazing. We were all so proud of what we achieved. In this project I’ve learnt SO much, with not one, but two professional double basses playing alongside me and teaching me.”

Raph Clarkson, the composer, said: This to me was the perfect way to mark the Cambridge Corn Exchange’s 150th anniversary. Coleridge’s young people truly rose to the occasion, bringing commitment, courage, passion and joy to the stage.

Chris Bell, Learning and Participation Director at the Britten Sinfonia, added: “Working with the pupils and Miss Lewis at Coleridge Community College has been nothing short of inspirational for our organisation. Their professionalism and hard work shone through in the final performance. The musical environment and culture that Miss Lewis has fostered at the school is truly exceptional.  Witnessing the care her students show for one another and their kindness and gratitude towards the Britten Sinfonia musicians was deeply moving. It was an inspiring reminder of the power of music to build community, and we hope to continue working together in the future.”

Matt Oughton, Principal at Coleridge Community College, said: Our students have found the experience of working with Raph Clarkson and musicians from the Britten Sinfonia to be both inspiring and richly rewarding, and I hope they are all proud of the excellent performance they put on. Thank you to Raph and Britten Sinfonia for all their hard work to make this a memorable opportunity for our students.”
