North Oxfordshire Academy Welcomes Local MP

Students engage in insightful conversations with Sean Woodcock, MP for Banbury.

A group of Sixth Form students at North Oxfordshire Academy had the opportunity to meet with their local MP, Sean Woodcock, during a special visit to the school last month.

During the session, students engaged with Mr Woodcock with a range of thoughtful and challenging questions, exploring current political issues and the role of an MP in representing the local community. The discussion offered valuable insights into parliamentary life and helped to broaden the students' understanding of national politics, and how the decisions made in Westminster affect people locally.

The students will have the opportunity to build on this experience when they travel to the Houses of Parliament in November, where they will witness the work of MPs and attend parliamentary debates firsthand.

Nicola Owen, Head of Humanities at North Oxfordshire Academy, said:

"It was an excellent opportunity for our students to engage directly with their MP and to gain a better understanding of the democratic process."

Year 13  student, Adam, who is hoping to study Politics at university next year, said:

"I was surprised by how approachable Sean was. It didn't feel like we were talking to a politician but to someone who really listened to us. I feel like I understand more about how decisions are made in Parliament now."

Sean Woodcock, MP for Banbury, said of his visit to the school:

"I was delighted to visit the North Oxfordshire Academy to speak with Sixth Form Politics students last week. I held a Q&A with students where they were able to ask me questions about my role as an MP and my views on certain topics. I was really impressed with the range of questions asked, from youth politics, the environment and the workings of the chamber to which football team I support.

"I wish the students all the best as they continue learning Politics, and hope they feel inspired that someone who grew up just around the corner from the school could go on to champion the area in Parliament. I wish them every success with their A Levels and beyond."
