As ‘Schools’ Football Week’ kicks off, pupils across United Learning are celebrating having reached their own ambitious football goal.

At the start of this academic year, schools across the Group were encouraged to take part in ‘Kick Off 2026’ – an initiative challenging young people to collectively participate in 2,026 football matches during the school football season ahead of the men’s FIFA World Cup 2026. Impressively, as of this week, schools have successfully reached this target.

With the aim of increasing participation in football among pupils, promoting physical activity and building anticipation for this summer’s men’s World Cup, the challenge inspired pupils to work together to reach a common goal whilst also introducing a healthy dose of competition.

Primary and secondary pupils across our academies and independent schools took part in the initiative, moving closer towards the 2,026 target each week. Whilst individual school fixtures ranged in number, one school completed a remarkable 111 matches.

Speaking about reaching the target, David, a Year 9 pupil at The Albion Academy and U14 Bolton Wanderers player, said:

“It’s really exciting that we reached our goal of completing 2,026 school football matches this season. Representing The Albion Academy is important to me because it gives me the opportunity to develop my skills, keep fit and have fun. I also really enjoy playing against other schools within Salford and Greater Manchester. It means that I meet new people in my school and develops my confidence whilst I am playing competitive matches.”

Another pupil who took part, Rhiane, at Castle View Academy added:

“I love football and as well as playing I like to watch the Lionesses. It was good to be involved in a project that got more people playing football and excited about the men’s World Cup this summer.”

Shaun Dowling, Head of Sport at United Learning, said:

“We are thrilled to have reached our ambitious goal of completing 2,026 school football matches this academic year before this summer’s men’s FIFA World Cup. This is an impressive achievement which reflects our schools’ commitment to promoting active, healthy lifestyles as well as the confidence and enjoyment that can be gained from physical activity. In particular, we are very pleased to have encouraged a range of students who have different levels of experience playing football to compete in matches and to join together through the unifying power of sport.”
