Significant improvements for the school on key measures against comparable pre-pandemic figures.

Raft of Year 11 students celebrate top grades

As GCSE qualifications are awarded around the country, students at The John Roan School in Greenwich are today celebrating their achievements.

This year, two thirds (65%) of the school’s Year 11s achieved a grade 4 or above in both English and maths, with 43% achieving grade 5 or above in the two subjects. This represents significant improvements compared to pre-pandemic 2019 figures – the last with comparable exam arrangements – for the school.

In addition to the whole-school improvements, there were a number of impressive individual performances from students. This includes:

  • Alicia, who achieved eight 9s and two 8s;
  • Ella, who achieved seven 9s, two 8s and a 7;
  • Maddison, who achieved five 9s and five 8s;
  • Lois, who achieved seven 9s and three 7s;
  • Seamus, who achieved four 9s, three 8s and a 7;
  • Nada, who achieved four 9s and five 8s;
  • Tom, who achieved five 9s, two 8s and three 7s.

The achievements seen across the cohort means that many of the students will be looking to return to the school’s Sixth Form for the coming term. The John Roan Sixth Form had its own bumper year last week – with a third of students achieving the results they needed to secure places at prestigious Russell Group universities.

Cath Smith, Principal at The John Roan School, said of the day’s achievements:

“It has been wonderful to see our Year 11s celebrating some excellent results today. Not only have they been committed to their studies and ambitious for themselves, but they have also shown character and resilience in how they approached their exam preparation. As a Headteacher, it is particularly gratifying to celebrate improvements both for the cohort as a whole and each individual success, knowing just what it means for them.

“Today’s outcomes are of course also testament to our brilliant staff team. They have worked incredibly hard to support each child to progress and succeed, no matter their starting point, so I would like to take the opportunity to thank them for everything they do for our students and school.”
