Windale Community Hub, which is based on the Windale Primary School site and run by The Oxford Hub, provides free space and support for local people to come together, share skills, build and test ideas that strengthen their community.
During Duchess Sophie’s visit, she met with a range of local individuals and groups who play a pivotal role in contributing to the local community and who make use of the Hub, including representatives from food and clothes banks, parent-led groups, and creative and environmental groups.
The Duchess also joined pupils from Windale Primary School as they took part in drumming and music activities hosted by Starlings Music Group – a global folk community orchestra based in Oxford.
Rebekah Sammut, Joint CEO of The Oxford Hub, said:
“Windale Community Hub is shaped by the people who use it. When local ideas are trusted, they grow. Families feel welcome, neighbours connect and people see their community differently. The Duchess of Edinburgh’s visit highlighted the pride, creativity and resilience that already exists in The Leys. We are here to help that grow and flourish alongside the many local organisations and activities who joined us today.”
Katie Geran-Haq, Headteacher at Windale Primary School, said:
“Our pupils were thrilled to greet The Duchess of Edinburgh at the Windale Community Hub, part of our school site. The day was extremely exciting for us all, and one which our pupils will remember for a long time.”
