The evening showcased the School’s restored and relocated Parthenon Casts. Donated to the School in 1914 by Reverend Charles Burney, they had, until recently, been hidden away in an ICT suite. An enterprising group of Classics students set up the Classical Society Surbiton Parthenon and kick-started their own project to restore, rehouse and reopen to the public the set of casts, taken from the marbles which once crowned the West Frieze of the ancient Athens' rocky outcrop. These differ from the ones on display at the British Museum which are taken from the East Frieze. The students successfully raised over £6,000 to restore the casts and they are now permanently on display for all to enjoy.
Olivia Adams, Teacher of Classics, has overseen the CSS Parthenon group's restoration project stated: “We were delighted to see such a fantastic turnout for our Inaugural Classics Lecture and are extremely proud of the legacy that the CSS Parthenon group’s restoration project has left for future pupils and generations to enjoy”.
