Excitement in the Air for GCSE Day at The Hurlingham Academy

Catgeories : GCSE results Group news

There has been excitement in the atmosphere again this summer at The Hurlingham Academy in West London, as students receive their GCSE results.

This year, three-quarters of Year 11s (76%) achieved a grade 5 or above in both English and maths – with 32% of them achieving a grade 7 or higher in the two subjects. Overall, an impressive 83% of the whole year group achieved at least a grade 4 in both English and maths.

These successes were also mirrored in the EBacc, which measures students’ performances across at least seven GCSEs in the five areas: English language, English literature, maths, double science or biology, chemistry and physics, history or geography and a language. This year, over half (53%) of The Hurlingham Academy’s Year 11s achieved the EBacc at grade 4 or above, with 41% of them doing so at grade 5 or higher.

In addition to the wider picture, among those students celebrating a raft of the highest possible grades today include:

  • Avery, who achieved nine grade 9s, one grade 8 and one grade 7;
  • Matheus, who achieved eight grade 9s, two grade 8s, one grade 7 and one grade 6;
  • Jordan, who achieved seven grade 9s and four grade 8s;
  • Christine, who achieved seven grade 9s, three grade 8s and one grade 7;
  • Artyom, who achieved seven grade 9s, three grade 8s and one grade 6;
  • Tamila, who achieved seven grade 9s, three grade 8s and one grade 6.

This summer’s results consolidate a year of reasons to celebrate for The Hurlingham Academy, as it was uprated to ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted after six years as a ‘Good’ school. The Inspectors’ report at the time remarked on the “admirable vision” that leaders have embedded across the school and how hard staff work to create a culture of aspiration, setting “high expectations” for all students, regardless of background or starting point.

Reflecting on the day’s celebrations, Leon Wilson, Principal at The Hurlingham Academy, said:

“Our Year 11 students have had some impressive individual performances today, with many receiving results which will enable them to take their next steps at Sixth Form and in education with confidence and pride. There is a strong culture of success and ambition that cascades through our school, which our young people continue to live up to and embody in their attitudes to their studies.

“As well as congratulating students today, I want to take the opportunity to thank our loyal staff team whose tireless efforts and encouragement of students is also evident in these excellent outcomes. This is a fantastic way to round off a year which saw the school rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted and provides even more inspiration to take with us into the new academic year in September.”
