Ofsted Inspectors praise “passionate and committed” staff for their support of children’s learning.

Stepping Stones Nursery in Bognor Regis is celebrating being judged ‘Good’ across all categories in its latest Ofsted inspection.

A visit to the nursery in April left Inspectors impressed with the early years provision offered – describing it as a place where children “flourish” and learn to “confidently express themselves”. Whilst it is said to be a “busy, vibrant setting”, parents told the Inspectors that it still feels “intimate with a family approach”.

Staff at the nursery are praised for knowing each child well and being “passionate” and “committed” in supporting their learning and personal development. In particular, Inspectors noted the support given to children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), who are “extremely well supported” and “expertly included” in the day-to-day of the school. Ofsted’s report also emphasises that children develop “a sense of belonging and identity” during their time at the nursery.

A particular strength highlighted in the Inspectors’ report was the way in which the curriculum is delivered, namely through “exciting activities” and early exposure to books and reading. As a result, Inspectors highlighted that children participate enthusiastically and have developed a “deep love of stories and rhymes”.

Alongside the curriculum, the specialist facilities on site – such as sensory rooms and the large and secure outdoor area – are used to supplement the children’s development and encourage them to expand their knowledge through their surroundings.

Lorraine Mellers, Nursery Manager at Stepping Stones, said of the outcome:

The Early Years are a vital part of a child’s development, as we look to ensure all the fundamental building blocks are in place before they start primary school. It is therefore wonderful to receive such positive feedback from Ofsted as part of our ‘Good’ inspection outcome.

“We strive to create a warm, exciting and nurturing environment so this result is a fantastic reward for staff’s hard work and commitment to children. We are very pleased that the Inspectors recognised everything that has gone into creating a safe and inclusive place for the children to learn and develop at Stepping Stones.”

Darran Ellison-Lee, director of Primary Education at United Learning, said of the report:

Among the numerous examples of how staff offer high-quality care and early years provision, it is excellent that Inspectors noted the confidence with which the children express themselves across the Nursery. This is of course matched by a strong emphasis on literacy and numeracy which is ensuring children make good progress and are well prepared for the next stage of their learning.

“We look forward to continuing to support staff at the Nursery as they take Stepping Stones from strength to strength and build on this highly encouraging outcome.”
