Strong improvements on key headline measures from 2019’s last comparable exam results

As students across the country receive their GCSE qualifications today, Year 11s at The Cornerstone Academy in Poole are celebrating the result of their hard work.

This year – the first to return to pre-pandemic exam arrangements – results show a strong improvement on 2019’s figures, the last comparable ones, particularly at the 5+ measure – where there has been a 19 percentage point increase.

Amidst the improvements on headline measures, there have also been some excellent individual performances, including:

  • Sophia Edwards, who achieved one grade 9, four 8s and three 7s;
  • Emma Roberts, who achieved four 8s and five 7s;
  • Sergiusz Gawin, who achieved one 9, three 8s and two 7s;
  • Callum Strange, who achieved one 8 and six 7s;
  • Emily Simmons, who achieved seven grade 7s.

Chris Phillips, Principal of The Cornerstone Academy, said of the day’s achievements:

“Each of our students celebrating today can be rightly proud, knowing that their hard work and determination has resulted in some strong outcomes. GCSE qualifications are an important milestone for young people as they move onto the next stage of their education and careers, so it is particularly gratifying to see some excellent individual performances as well as improvements across the cohort on 2019’s last comparable figures. This is a credit to them and to staff, whose support is invaluable and ensures every student is supported to achieve well.”

Reflecting on her achievements, Year 11 Emily Simmons said:

“I’m really proud of what I have achieved and how my hard work has paid off. Thank you to The Cornerstone Academy and to all of my teachers. Special thanks to the Library and Mrs Bartlett for all of the extra support.”

Emma Roberts added:

"I'm so grateful to The Cornerstone Academy for everything – coming to secondary school is so daunting but they have been so welcoming, I will really miss it! I absolutely loved English so thank you to my English teachers and thank you to Miss Pitman, she is the best!"

Callum Strange also said:

"I am really proud of myself and my results. Big thank you to The Cornerstone academy and a special shoutout to Mr Attridge."
