A group of dedicated Accrington Academy Sixth Formers braved the elements last week to become the first students from the school to successfully complete their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award.
The seven students spent four days navigating their way round the Peak District, facing driving rain and poor visibility as they completed a number of routes including the famous Jacob’s Ladder and Kinder Scout.
Despite continual rain and sodden equipment, the weather failed to dampen their spirits as they impressed their assessors with their navigational and camp craft skills, resulting in successful completion of the trek and most importantly, the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award.
Commenting on their success, Accrington Academy Principal Andy O’Brien said:
“All seven have shown real dedication and determination during their participation in the DofE, with last week’s final leg particularly grueling, but through teamwork and resilience, they successfully completed the event and their gold status is thoroughly well deserved.”
