Surbiton High School shortlisted for Creativity Award at TES Independent School Awards

Surbiton High School is one of just 8 schools from across the country to be shortlisted in the Creativity category at the prestigious TES Independent School Awards.

The Creativity Award recognises independent schools that have taken a creative approach beyond the structures of the conventional curriculum and applied it to all areas of school life.

“Creativity is at the heart of the Surbiton High School’s ethos as we inspire, encourage and empower our pupils,” said Acting Principal, Mr Silas Edmonds. “Drawing on a variety of flourishing strengths, we have always been eminently proud to be the first school in the country to appoint an Entrepreneur in Residence, developing our innovative learning programme and orchestrating higher order thinking skills in our pupils. Our children also benefit from the School’s inspirational Writer in Residence, eliciting their courage to be imaginative instigators and harnessing their potential as great communicators. Surbiton’s Director in Residence and Artist in Residence both empower and cultivate our children’s curiosity and originality, celebrating their independent freedom to express themselves.”

Surbiton’s award submission comprised three different elements: demonstrating their approach to developing an entrepreneurial spirit through different age-based activities; harnessing creative thinking through their Student Laureates programme and partnering with the Young StorySLAM; and working collaboratively between departments with their art and biology independent learning project.

The winner of the award will be announced at a ceremony in London in February 2018.
