Professional development programmes

We offer a range of professional development for staff at every stage of their career through United Learning, the Central London Teaching Schools Hub, and the Swindon & Wilshire Teaching Schools Hub.

Initial Teacher Training

United Teaching is an Ofsted rated ‘Outstanding’ teacher training programme with a strong presence in schools across England. Part of the United Learning group, our teacher training programme extends to over 100 primary, secondary and independent schools. Over the past decade, United Teaching has played a pivotal role in nurturing exceptional educators, empowering them to lead, inspire, and drive meaningful change in the classroom, ultimately bringing out the best in everyone.

Early Careers Framework

The Early Career Framework (ECF) is designed to help teachers succeed at the start of their careers. It became statutory from September 2021, replacing the NQT process for induction.

The ECF programme consists of face-to-face training, virtual learning groups, webinars and weekly video tutorials, and has been tailored to fit with the demands of school life by providing online learning that can be undertaken at any time, in any place.

This Department for Education-funded programme aims to help educators develop expertise against the Teacher's Standards and has strong focus on improving wellbeing and job satisfaction for those new to the profession.

We offer the full suite of NPQ programmes. The courses available are:

  • Headship

Leadership Development Programmes

United Learning is invested in leadership development. From January to July every year, we deliver programmes that are designed by United Learning leaders, with content designed to highlight their experience and expertise, plus evidence informed best practice. These Courses include:

  • Middle Leadership Programme (MLP)
  • Senior Leadership Programme (SLP)

The Senior Leadership Programme is extended to leaders outside of United Learning. It is free to join and open to middle leaders aspiring to be senior leaders, or newly appointed senior leaders, from any UK school.

Future Teachers

United Teaching’s Future Teachers is a salaried programme designed to kickstart your teaching career, based in your local school. This programme offers an immersive experience where you'll become an integral part of the school community, gaining invaluable insights and hands-on experience.

The programme:

  • Lesson cover: You will lead and cover lessons across all subjects contributing to pupil progress.
  • Lesson planning: You will have the opportunity to design and deliver lessons in your chosen subject, allowing you to hone your teaching skills.
  • Participation in school activities: Beyond the classroom, you'll actively contribute to pastoral care and extracurricular activities.

A dedicated subject mentor will guide you through your first year of school life. Upon successful completion, we will support you to secure a salaried teacher training place for the following year. Future Teachers is a proven way to develop your professional skills so that you can start your teacher training with confidence.

Apprenticeships

With over one hundred schools and 10,000 staff, we understand the importance of attracting and retaining trained, motivated support staff.

Apprenticeships offer an opportunity for new and existing staff to advance their skills and complete nationally recognised qualifications. Apprenticeships are fully funded for United Learning colleagues.

United Learning is an apprenticeship provider. We offer courses for Teaching Assistants, Early Years Educators, and HR Support staff through our excellent apprenticeship scheme. These courses are available to external organisations, and if your organisation pays the apprenticeship levy, there is no cost.

As part of our professional development offer for support staff, we deliver business manager development programmes. These programmes provide aspiring and new business managers with the opportunity to hear from a range of central experts and experienced school and executive business managers.
