AKS Lytham has marked the climax of the sporting year with a second Sports Celebration Evening recognising the achievements of the school’s athletes.
The event proved to be a great success thanks to special guest Jason Gardener – one of the UK’s all-time greatest sprinters and Olympic champion. He presented awards to pupils and gave an inspirational speech about ambition and perseverance, as well as showing off his famous gold medal to the youngsters.
In welcoming Jason and all the guests, AKS PE Teacher Miss DeMiranda congratulated pupils on another tremendous year on the sports field in a wide range of sports – from rugby to table tennis, hockey to rounders. This included many team successes at a local and regional level as well as individual international honours for present and past pupils, once again reflecting the breadth of opportunities and success enjoyed by pupils at AKS.
During the event, Year 7 pupils Olivia, Maddison and Georgina spoke to guests about their first sporting year at AKS and how much they had enjoyed all the activities on offer. Senior pupils Charlie and Georgia spoke of the lifelong friends they have gained and the many lessons learnt from being involved in sport during their years at AKS.
After pupils’ speeches, Jason presented awards to all the ‘Players of the Season’ and ‘Most Improved Players’ for the different winter and summer sports. Presentations were also made to the pupils in each year who had made the greatest contribution to school sport and to the junior pupils who had contributed to the most successful ever year for AKS’s younger pupils.
The final presentations were fittingly made to AKS’s senior pupils, who have continued to contribute significantly to the sporting life of the school during their time in the Sixth Form.
After the awards, Jason gave an inspirational address in which he gave a personal account of his athletics achievements and an honest insight into the trials and tribulations of elite sport at the highest level. He advised pupils always to make the most of the talent you have, to overcome barriers, to learn from mistakes and to seize every opportunity you get through your hard work commitment.
Alan Holmes, interim Head of Academic PE at AKS, said of the event:
“A big thank you to Team GB Jason Gardener for being our guest of honour and for sharing such inspirational words with us.”
