Mayor Boris Johnson Visits The Hurlingham Academy

Students and staff at The Hurlingham Academy were delighted to welcome London Mayor Boris Johnson through their doors to congratulate them on their GCSE success this summer.

The mayor met with students and the academy’s new Senior Leadership Team, who set out their vision for the school’s future and discussed the strong improvements which have already been made in teaching, learning and student behaviour.

Students at The Hurlingham Academy listened to a speech from the mayor, who gave them an insight into a normal day in his role as Mayor of London. Discussing the diversity of the city and its role as a global leader, he asked students what they would do as mayor; suggestions included solving the housing crisis and making transport greener.

The mayor also took the time to meet with the London Irish Rugby team, the local club which the academy has a close partnership with, and signed his own team shirt. Later, he challenged some Year 11 students to a table tennis match.

During his visit, Mayor Boris Johnson said:

“Our country needs young people like you at The Hurlingham Academy to aspire and strive to be political leaders; one of you could be a future Mayor of London.

“The key is to always keep trying, even if you come up against obstacles, because if you persevere you will succeed.”

Leon Wilson, Senior Vice Principal at The Hurlingham Academy said:

“It was with great pleasure that we welcomed Mayor Boris Johnson – his speech to students was inspiring and will encourage them to aim to be the best they can be.

“Visitors regularly remark how different a place our school now is and I hope that local families will come and see for themselves what a thriving, on-the-up school The Hurlingham Academy is fast becoming.

“Already we have seen dramatic improvements at The Hurlingham Academy and I am confident that with the continued vigour and determination of our students and staff we will build on this success in the years to come.”
