Protect the dream: Jason Gardener MBE Visits Shoreham Academy

On Friday 16th October, Shoreham Academy welcomed United Learning Sports Ambassador, Jason Gardener, MBE. Mr Pulling, Director of Sport at the school, recalls his visit.

Jason who is soon to be President of UK Athletics won Olympic Gold in the 2004 Athens Olympics as part of the 4x100m relay team which also included Darren Campbell, Marlon Devenish and Mark Lewis-Francis.

Jason had a busy schedule at Shoreham Academy, in the morning he delivered inspirational talks with question and answer sessions to APEX (gifted and talented) PE students and students from the variety of PE courses offered at Shoreham Academy including GCSE PE, A-Level PE and BTEC Sport. In the afternoon he delivered speed and power workshops to the year 11 GCSE PE cohort.

With Jason’s extensive background in sprint training he was able to pass on key theoretical knowledge to our students regarding training methods and periodisation.

During his time at Shoreham Academy Jason explained to the students that it took him 10 years to get 1 second faster, a message that highlights the commitment required to reach elite sporting levels. He also told the students to ‘protect the dream’ and recalled when his coach once said to him ‘if not you, who? If not now when?’ A message that will stay with the inspired Shoreham Academy students as they progress both in sport and in other areas of life.

Shoreham Academy and the PE team would like to that Jason for his time spent with us. We hugely appreciate him making the effort to work with our students and realise just how lucky we were to be in the presence of an Olympic gold medallist.
