Shoreham Academy Tops Local Tables for Student Progress

Academy rounds off GCSE improvement with above average Progress 8 score

In the government’s new, revised performance tables this week, Shoreham Academy has topped local tables in Worthing and Brighton for the progress its students make.

Progress 8 is one of the government’s new measures and reflects the progress students make from their respective starting points in Year 7 to the GCSE result they achieve in Year 11, across eight core subjects.

As well as seeing three consecutive years of improvement in the number of students achieving at least five A*to C grades including English and maths, Shoreham Academy has achieved an above average Progress 8 score of 0.3. This score has put it top of the table for Worthing schools on this measure, and joint top amongst Brighton schools.

Jim Coupe, Principal of Shoreham Academy said:

“These figures demonstrate the important progress that our students make throughout their time at Shoreham Academy. We do not hide our ambition for our students here and therefore, from their first days in Year 7, each child understands that we will encourage them to go beyond what they may believe they are capable of achieving and do even better. So it’s great to see this reflected in how our students perform compared to similar children locally and around the country.”

Davie Oakes, Senior Vice Principal at Shoreham Academy, said of the results:

“We are very pleased that our Progress 8 score reflects the hard work and achievement of our students across their entire school careers with us. Likewise, it is testament to the dedication of staff in ensuring that each and every lesson counts and that students are supported to achieve and exceed their targets and goals. With many of last year’s Year 11 cohort now studying in our Sixth Form, we look forward to seeing them replicate this success in their A Levels and university applications.”
