Sixth Formers Meet Reigate Politician on Trip to House of Commons

On Wednesday 10th June, a group of sixth formers from Dunottar enjoyed a trip to London and met Crispin Blunt, Reigate’s Member of Parliament.

Following the recent national and local elections, the visit to the House of Commons aimed to develop the pupils’ awareness of democracy at work. They attended a workshop on rights and representations, run by the Parliamentary Education Service at Portcullis House.

In the conference room, the students received a surprise visit from Reigate’s Member of Parliament, Crispin Blunt.

Head of English Andrew Simmons, who accompanied the pupils, said: “He’s very affable. He asked the pupils questions and got direct answers!”

At the House of Commons, the sixth formers watched Prime Minister’s Question Time with David Cameron and listened to Harriet Harman quizzing him on the government’s G7 statement.

School Captain Izzie Watson, 17, commented: “It was interesting to watch the part of the G7 statement in the House of Commons and see some familiar faces walking around: Ed Miliband is much taller than he looks on television!”

As well as seeing the former head of the Labour party, the students enjoyed a tour around the House of Commons and were thrilled to see Labour leadership candidate Andy Burnham.

"It was great to see democracy at work as close up as you can get,” said Mr Simmons. “It’s good to know that politicians are (mostly) just like us!”
