Smiles all round at The Totteridge Academy for GCSE day

There were smiles all round at The Totteridge Academy this morning as GCSE qualifications were awarded, despite what has been another challenging year due to the pandemic.

This year, GCSEs were awarded following Teacher Assessed Grades (TAGs) due to the cancellation of external examinations. As part of this assessment process, students at the academy sat moderated exams and completed a variety of coursework to demonstrate the progress they had made.

Today was an important occasion as students and staff celebrated the hard work and commitment over the past five years that had gone into these GCSE grades.

Among those celebrating particular individual successes today were:

  • Beth Pearce, who was awarded Grade 9s across all of her subjects;
  • Dhillan Gajjar, who was awarded eight Grade 9s and a Grade 8;
  • Yuto Roco Imiya, who was awarded all Grade 9s bar her Grade 8s in English Literature and English Language, having joined the school direct from Spain;
  • Brendonas Steponaitis, who was awarded eight Grade 9s and a Grade 6;
  • Felix Collins, who was awarded five Grade 9s and four Grade 8s;
  • Funda Mincheva, Yasmina Abdel-All, Sofia Sobchacki and Nikola Derpak, who were all awarded two or three Grade 9s along with a collection of 7s and 8s.

Now, the majority of Year 11 students will be preparing to return to the academy’s new Sixth Form to channel their energy and enthusiasm into their A Level studies – and setting their sights high for the UK’s top universities and apprenticeships.

Chris Fairbairn, Principal of The Totteridge Academy, said of today’s achievements:

“Our popularity as a school stems from the support we give our students and the ambition we encourage them to have for themselves and for their futures. Never has this been more needed than during the past 18 months, when across the school young people have faced unprecedented challenges due to Covid-19.

“I am so proud and pleased that today’s GCSE qualifications reflect the resilience and hard work of our Year 11s and I congratulate every student who is celebrating today. Having gone through the past 18 months as a school, we are ideally placed for whatever challenges the pandemic presents us with in the future, confident in our ability to provide every year group with the blended education they may need during any future restrictions.

“With our new Sixth Form now open and thriving, parents and young people locally fully appreciate the opportunities available on their doorstep at The Totteridge Academy. We look forward to welcoming the majority of these fantastic Year 11s back for their A Levels in a few short weeks.”
