Over the course of the Spirit of Rio festival, United Learning schools have been raising awareness and money for Action for Brazil’s Children (ABC Trust).
As part of this, representatives from ABC visited pupils at Wilberforce Primary to talk about the work they are doing to help disadvantaged and vulnerable children across Brazil, including those in Rio de Janeiro’s favelas ahead of this summer’s Olympic and Paralympic Games.
During their assembly to Years 1-6, the ABC representatives spoke about how the Trust helps children who do not have the same access to opportunities that many pupils at the school have in terms of education and support.
Alice, one of the presenters, taught the children a bit about Brazil – including how to count up to ten in Portuguese – and about the important education opportunities and extracurricular activities the charity facilitates in Rio and other Brazilian cities.
Pupils and staff at Wilberforce Primary were so inspired by the assembly that they have been organising a penny drive throughout the month of Ramadan.
