Hunningley Primary School has received the prestigious School Games Silver Mark in just its first year of taking part in the scheme.
The School Games Mark is a government led initiative which rewards schools for their commitment to the development of competition, both within the school environment and out into the community.
Supported by Primary Sports Co-ordinator Chris Wood, Hunningley has been involved in a wide variety of sporting activities, both independently, as well as in conjunction with its fellow United Learning school, Worsbrough Bank End Primary. Activities have included:
- Receiving the Bronze medal in a regional girls’ football competition
- Athletics competition
- Tennis tourNament
- Extra-curricular sports clubs including a mini football league
- Taking part in the opening ceremony of the mens’ race in the Tour De Yorkshire
Commented Chris Wood:
“It's the first year I've been working within Hunningley and we've made so much progress with sport in the school in such a short time. We also liaise closely with the PE department at Barnsley Academy to run competitions, sports days and other activities and also have a wide range of plans for next year to keep improving sports provision at Hunningley, giving children more and more opportunities, both competitive and non-competitive.”
Commenting on the award, Hunningley Headteacher Caroline Dean said
“Sport is an incredibly important part of the curriculum here at Hunningley and we’re so pleased to have gained official recognition for our work in this area.”
