Two United Learning technology leaders celebrated in the UK’s EdTech50

United Learning’s Group Director of Technology and Jose Picardo, Deputy Head at Hampshire Collegiate School have been named in the UK EdTEch 50 which  celebrates the people, products and projects shaping the education and technology sector across the UK.

 The list was launched by Edtech UK and Jisc at a House of Lords reception.

 The awards recognise products and projects demonstrating effective and impactful use of edtech in the UK, along with individuals who have played a leading role in developing this area of work.  Both the United Learning leaders are featured in the key Educators section of the list which celebrates the work of individuals working in and with schools to promote the effective use of technology in classroom-based learning.

 As a successful national group of academies and independent schools, United Learning has rightly championed the potential of technology in the classroom;  trialling and rolling out a number of group-wide initiatives developed by its Technology Team led by Dominic Norrish and within individual schools such as Surbiton High School and Hampshire Collegiate School under the leadership of Jose Picardo.

Announcing the list, Ty Goddard, director of Edtech UK, said:

“The Edtech50 has been chosen from a mixture of public nominations and the insight of our judging panel. It has been a challenging and exciting process. The Edtech50 helps us all celebrate a wonderful sector, whilst recognising the benefits of education technology, and acknowledging the economic advantages of the growing edtech sector to the whole UK economy.” 

 Dominic Norrish said:

“We are fortunate that, across United Learning there is a real appetite for using technology as an enabler rather than as a novelty. Our schools understand its limits as well as its potential. As education professionals, we can identify the challenges and problems that technology can help overcome and work to ensure it is only used where it adds educational value. Likewise, we also understand the needs of teachers and pupils and how best to make technology work for them rather than the tail wagging the dog”.

 Jose Picardo said:

“It is very encouraging to see bodies representing the EdTch sector in the UK recognising the work of companies and educators who work hard to understand the role of technology in supporting teaching and learning, so that it can be integrated seamlessly into daily practice and used, when appropriate, almost reflexively, effectively and without fuss”.
