Olympic gold medalist Jason Gardener visits Accrington Academy

What makes a winner? That was the message from Olympic gold medalist Jason Gar-dener when he paid a visit to Accrington Academy on Tuesday 15th September, as part of his work as a United Learning Sport Ambassador.

Jason, who won a gold medal in the 4x4 100 metres relay at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, led the academy's sports ambassadors for an hour long athletics session, taking them through a typical training regime for an Olympic athlete.

Prior to his academy visit, Jason was also guest of honour at the annual 'Hyndburn and Ribble Valley Sports Partnership' Conference held at the Accrington Globe Centre, where he addressed more than 60 Head Teachers and PE specialists. The event built on the incredible success of the partnership over the last 12 months and promoted the vision for PE and school sport in the area for the next academic year (2015 - 2016).

During the event, the champion sprinter inspired the audience with his story of overco-ming early disappointment to achieve his ultimate goal of winning an Olympic Gold me-dal, highlighting the role his teachers (right back to primary school) and coaches played in his success.

Commented Accrington Academy Principal Andy O’Brien:

"At Accrington Academy, we continually strive to bring out the best in our students and who better to help inspire them onto success than an Olympic gold medallist. A big thank you to Jason for taking the time to visit the academy and pass on his winning ways to our students and staff."
