Local Careers Partnership Empowers Students

Catgeories : Group news School news

Testament to the partnership’s success, several students have been offered summer work experience placements at local nurseries.

Students at The John Roan School have been benefitting from a local careers partnership which gives them the opportunity to explore career paths and enhance their career skills during their time at school.

Building on the school’s wider career programme, a group of Year 11 students studying Health and Social Care are getting the opportunity to gain first-hand insights from professionals at More2Nurseries – a small group of local, community-based nurseries in Greenwich rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted that offers early years childcare and education.

Through the partnership, select students have now been offered places to work at the nurseries over the summer holidays. This opportunity will allow them to give back to their local community, whilst gaining practical skills in a professional setting.

Earlier in the academic year, More2Nurseries staff visited the school to deliver an informative session to Year 11 students, with expert guidance on how to master job interviews and craft CVs. The nursery staff have also supported students in fulfilling the volunteering section of their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

The partnership has been set up through the efforts of The John Roan School Association, a group of parents and teachers who support the school in delivering an excellent education through events and fundraising initiatives.

Eve Daniels, Chair of the John Roan School Association, said of the partnership:

"As a parent living in our local community for over 50 years, I am pleased to be able to introduce the school to local businesses such as More2 and watch these relationships grow into career opportunities for the students.

Tracey Sumner, Head of Health and Social Care at The John Roan School, said:

“This has been an invaluable experience for our students. We are looking forward to continuing to develop vocational links with More2Nurseries as it provides an excellent opportunity to teach students key life skills in a 'real-life' health and social care setting.

Amirah Mohammad, one of the students who will be taking up work experience at one of the nurseries over the summer, said:

I am overwhelmingly pleased to be offered the chance to work with children at the More2Nurseries. I have already learnt so much from the team. They have helped me with important life skills such as interview techniques and how to write a CV. My understanding of Early Years has also improved and I am really looking forward to helping the children develop. This opportunity has also hugely increased my confidence.”

Rosalie Bennett, Nursery Director of More2Nurseries, said:

"It has been a pleasure watching this cohort of students learn, improve their skills and grow over the last six months. We are excited to see if they choose Early Years teaching as a profession in the not-so-distant future, giving them a career when they finish their educational journey with The John Roan."
