In partnership with the Brownlee Foundation, the British Triathlon Trust and Leeds Active Schools, the school hosted a triathlon which saw over 1,000 local students complete a swim, bike, run in just over 4 hours - most for the first time. The Brownlee brothers are serious in their desire to "inspire a generation" through their global success, especially in their home city of Leeds and the wider Yorkshire area.
Despite both carrying long-term injuries, they remained on their feet all day, encouraging the young athletes, signing autographs and posing for photographs, all with beaming smiles and taking a genuine interest in the youngsters.
The John Smeaton Academy staff members Lee and Hannah and their tremendous sports leaders ensured that the day went to plan and that their guests had an incredible experience. Such was the success of the day that the potential of a return in June has already been discussed.
